Definition of Distance Education
Distance Education is an organized educational process that bridges the separation between students and educators, mediated by the utilization of technology and minimal face-to-face meetings.
- Distance Education is offered across space and time, allowing students to gain flexibility in learning at different times and places, while utilizing diverse learning resources.
- Typically taking the form of mass education, Distance Education has evolved from correspondence education to e-learning across space and time.
- Individual/self-study or group learning utilizes Information Technology and Communication (ITC) and networks.
It provides the flexibility for students to learn anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. It can be combined with face-to-face / blended learning, but it holds innovative value as it introduces a new dimension to the teaching and learning process, distinct from conventional face-to-face learning.
Distance Education is characterized by Information Technology and Communication (ITC): it is open, self-directed, mastery-based, uses information and communication technology, employs other educational technologies, and/or involves integrated higher education learning. The implementation of Distance Education programs is fundamentally based on the principles of open education and distance education.
Open Education Principle
Open education reflects the provision of education through a multi-entry, multi-exit system, without limiting:
- Age
- Year of diploma
- Background field of study
- Study duration and speed
- Registration period
- Place and method of learning
- Evaluation period of learning outcomes
- Selection of study programs
Distance Education can provide specific and inclusive special educational services. For example, it is open to anyone to become a student; open for students to take any desired study program or course; open for students to learn through diverse methods and strategies; and open for students to take exams in various forms whenever needed. The flexibility in learning provided by the organizing institution allows for various degrees of intensity for the students.
